Basketball is a physical, hand-centred, confrontational sport that is the core sport of the Olympic Games.
It was invented on 21 December 1891 by James Naismith, a physical education teacher at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. 1896 saw the introduction of basketball to Tianjin, China. 1904 saw the first exhibition basketball game at the St Louis Olympics. 1936 saw the introduction of basketball as an official sport at the Berlin Olympics, and China sent its first basketball team to the Games. In 1992, at the Barcelona Olympics, professional players were allowed to compete in the Olympic basketball tournament.
